TIL that ad I laughed at for 2 years was actually a real local spot, not a parody
I drive past the same billboard on Route 9 near Freehold twice a day, and for almost 24 months I thought it was a joke someone put up as a prank. The photo is a stock guy grinning in a suit with his arms crossed, and the text just says "We Buy Ugly Houses, Call Sal." I finally looked it up a few weeks back and Sal has a real office, a real website, and honestly not terrible reviews. The thing is, the ad works because the bad photo and the low budget look make you stop and stare at it, which is more than I can say for the three slick car dealership ads next to it. I used to flip past local ads like that without a second look, but now I actually pay attention to the messy ones because they seem to stick in my head longer. Does anyone else have a local ad they swore was a bit until they found out the business was totally legit?
Man, yes! There's a mattress place near me with a guy in a fake crown yelling about prices and I always figured it was some kind of sketch comedy bit. Turns out it's a family store that's been there since the 80s and people actually love the guy. Same deal as Sal, the whole thing looks like a joke but that's why you remember it. A friend of mine even bought a couch there and said the owner was super nice. The slick corporate ads all blend together but the weird cheap ones stay in your head for years.
