Am I the only one who watched an AI restore a 1890s photo of my great grandma and now I can't stop thinking about it
So my cousin dropped off this beat up photo at my place in Boise last month. It was my great grandma from around 1890, all cracked and faded, half her face basically gone. I ran it through one of those free AI restore tools just to mess around, figured it would come back looking like a melted wax figure or something. Twenty minutes later I had a version where you could see her eyebrows and the stitching on her collar. Then the weird part hit me. I went back and found the original scan from 2015 that I did on a cheap flatbed, and compared it to what the AI spit out, and the difference was like night and day. The old scan had maybe 30 percent of the detail, and this new one pulled stuff out of what was basically gray mush. I keep going back and forth on whether it counts as a real photo of her anymore, because the tool is guessing at pixels that were never there. Anyone else mess with this stuff and feel strange about it after?
