A pilot asked me why I torque things twice and it made me rethink my whole routine
Was doing a wheel change on a 737 at MCO and this pilot hangs around, watching me. He's not being a jerk, just curious. Asks why I torque the lug nuts to 150 then back off and retorque to 75. I gave him the standard line about seating and creep. He goes, "So you never just trust the first number?" and walks off.
That sat with me all afternoon. I've done it that way for 16 years because my first crew chief showed me that way. Never really questioned it. Turns out half the guys here do it different, some just run them to 75 once and call it good. The other half do the double tap like me. We are all passing the same inspections.
Makes me wonder how much of what I do is actual best practice vs. just what some old timer drilled into me back in A&P school. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple question from a non-mechanic made you look at your own habits different? What other stuff do we do out of routine that might not even matter?
