Rewatched Akira at the Alamo Drafthouse and flipped my whole take
I used to think Akira was all style over substance, but last Friday I caught the 35mm screening at the Alamo in Austin and the crowd's reaction to Kaneda's speech hit me differently. The sound mix in that theater made the bike chase feel like a live motorcycle race, and I finally noticed how much the plot is about government fear of teenage rebellion in 1988 Japan. Has anyone else had a movie totally change for them after seeing it in a packed room with real fans?
