Old timer said never trust a fridge thermometer, I laughed, then lost $180
A guy named Ray who has run a shop in Tucson for like 30 years told me to stop trusting those cheap suction cup thermometers in fridges because they read the air, not the food. I rolled my eyes and kept using mine for two years, no problems. Then a customer called back three days after I swapped her compressor, said her milk was warm, and I had to eat the $180 part cost plus a free return visit. Ray just smiled and handed me his old dial probe, said stick it in a glass of water overnight and check it in the morning. So what do you all actually use to check temps before you call a job done?

My uncle ran a diner in Flagstaff for 20 years and he'd pull the thermometer out and drop it in his coffee cup, then check it against the big wall clock after his first refill. Said it was the only way to know if the glass was actually cold or just felt cold. We teased him about it until his walk-in quit one July and every burger in town was fine while the place next door lost everything.
