Vent: The guard at a dig site in Tucson made me rebag 40 artifacts and now I label everything twice
I was volunteering at a site outside Tucson last month and had spent three mornings bagging pottery sherds from one unit. A visiting lab manager looked in my bag, said the provenience info was "thin," and made me dump all 40 pieces out and start over. I had written the unit and level but skipped the sub-square and date, because nobody told me the site used a finer grid than my last project. It took me two extra hours to rebag and relabel everything, and I was so mad I almost left early. Now I write unit, level, sub-square, date, and my initials on every tag before a single sherd goes in. Does your crew require sub-square on every bag, or do you just do it by level?
