Dude at the gas station asked me a question that changed how I tip

Stopped for coffee in Phoenix around 6am and this old guy filling up next to me asked why I always tip 20% at counters. I mumbled something about habit, and he said he rounds up to the nearest dollar so the cashier remembers him. Made me think, now I ask myself if my tip is about me or them. Anyone else get hit with a random stranger question that stuck?
