Why does nobody warn you about syncing photos before a phone swap

I switched from an old Android to a new one last Saturday and figured Google Photos had everything backed up like it said. Turns out the backup had stalled back in March because my storage was full, so I lost about 800 photos from a trip to Portland. I spent 4 hours trying recovery tools and finally got maybe half back from a buried cache folder on the old device. The whole thing could've been a 10 minute check on the settings screen, but I never looked until it was too late. Has anyone else had a cloud sync quietly fail on them and lose stuff, or is it just my luck?

Happened to me too, stalled sync wiped a year of kid photos.
