Body filler over bare plastic is biting people on bumper jobs and nobody checks the tech sheet
I keep seeing bumper repairs come back with peeling edges at my place in Mesa, and it traces to the same step every time. Three of the last five comebacks were techs spreading filler straight onto bare TPO or polypropylene without an adhesion promoter, and it let go within 6 to 8 months. The tech sheet on most of these fillers literally says bare metal or sanded primer only, and flexible plastic needs a promoter first or the filler just sits on top. I know because I cut one of the failed spots open with a razor and could lift the whole patch off with a fingernail. One bumper came back after 4 months with a crack spreading from the parking sensor hole where the filler shrank and pulled away from the plastic. Are other people running into this with the newer plastic bumper covers, or is it just something the guys at my place keep skipping?
