My old boss told me to stop block sanding by feel after 15 years and I think he's actually right

Man, block sanding by feel for 15 years is a long time to trust your hands over your eyes. I did the same thing for years until a guy showed me how to use guide coat and a long board, and it was like night and day. You just can't feel the low spots the way you can see them.
