Debate: should you abandon a route when your tent pole snaps mid-trail?

I was 3 days into the John Muir Trail last summer when my tent pole cracked in a wind gust, and I had to decide between rigging it with duct tape and a trekking pole or hiking 6 miles back to the nearest ranger station, so what would you do - push through with a good enough fix or turn back?

Joke's on me, I duct taped mine and woke up staring at the stars...

Oh man, I once used packing tape on my tent and woke up with a raccoon staring right at me...

Duct tape held my tent together for four days on the PCT, no way I'd turn back.
