My credit union teller said to stop rounding up my debit card purchases, and she was right
Honestly, I always thought those round up savings programs were a no brainer. My old bank in Dayton pushed them hard, so when I switched to a credit union last year I signed up right away. Every debit card swipe got bumped to the next dollar and the change went into savings. The teller, Karen, pulled me aside one day and said 'you're overdrafting about twice a month because of this.' I checked and she was right. Those little 43 cent and 67 cent transfers were hitting my account before my paycheck cleared, and I got hit with $35 overdraft fees. Last March alone I paid $105 in fees to save maybe $14 in change. I turned the program off and my account has not gone negative since. Has anyone else had a bank product backfire on them like that?
