Cut a regular's beard with clippers vs scissors and I still can't decide which way is right
I've been cutting this same guy's beard every 3 weeks for almost 2 years now at my chair in Sacramento, and last month he told me to just do whatever I think looks best. I went with the clippers first, 1 guard on the sides and a 3 on the chin, and he loved it but said it felt too blunt at the bottom. So this time I went back to scissors and comb, took me 40 minutes instead of 15, and he said it looked cleaner but the shape wasn't as sharp. Now I really can't tell which one is actually the better cut, or if I just need to blend the two. Any of you got a rule for when you reach for the scissors over the clippers on a beard, or do you just go by feel every time?
Blend the two and stop fighting yourself over it. I do the clipper work to set the length and shape, then go back over the bottom edge with scissors so it doesn't come out blunt like your guy said. Takes maybe 20 minutes and the regulars can't tell where one tool stopped and the other started.
