Watching an old barber in Tulsa strop his razor for 10 minutes before my cut changed how I finish every fade
I was in Tulsa visiting my brother two weeks ago and stopped in this little shop off 11th street for a trim. Older guy, maybe 70, runs the place alone. Before he touched my neck he spent a solid 10 minutes working his straight razor on a leather strop hanging off the chair. I asked him why so long for one cut. He just said the edge tells you when it is ready, you do not tell it. Then he went through my lineup slower than anyone ever has and it came out cleaner than cuts I have paid $45 for back home. Since then I have been stropping my razor 15 passes minimum before every fade instead of the 3 or 4 I used to do, and my lines are way crisper. Anyone else here change up their finishing routine after watching somebody older work? Curious what little habits you picked up from other barbers.
