I tried a 15 second hook on the same clip and views fell 80 percent, here is what I think happened
Last month I ran a little test with a cooking clip that had already done okay for me. I posted the original 42 second version on a Tuesday, it got 310k views and a bunch of saves. Two weeks later I cut the same footage down to 15 seconds with a hard hook in the first second, and it got 61k. I thought shorter meant better reach, but the saves tanked too, which tells me people were watching longer because the payoff was worth waiting for. The fast version gave away the ending so nobody had a reason to stick around. I am not saying hooks are useless, I am saying I was copying the loudest advice on the internet without checking what my own numbers said. Has anyone else cut a video down and watched it do worse than the long one?
Did you check the retention graph on both to see where people dropped off? I did the same thing with a woodworking clip and my long version kept way more people past the 30 second mark, while the short one lost them right after the hook. Now I only cut short if the clip has a quick payoff, otherwise I leave it long and let the ending pull people through.
