Stop trusting that chain wear tool without checking zero

I had a chain measure .5 on the gauge but it was actually stretched past 1.0 because the tool sat slightly crooked in the link, cost me a cassette and chainrings last month in Portland. Has anyone else had a cheap gauge drift out of spec right out of the package, or do I need to buy a nicer one?
