Hot take: I turned down a $900 flat fee deal for a $400 one with a real contract and it worked out
Got two offers the same week back in March, one was $900 flat from some random gmail account claiming to be a skincare startup, the other was $400 plus product from a small candle brand out of Portland that actually sent a real contract. The $900 one wanted 4 reels, 3 stories, and full usage rights forever with no kill fee, and when I asked for a simple contract they ghosted me. The candle people paid half upfront, gave me a clear deadline, and even let me keep the footage. Two other creators I know took that same skincare offer and none of them ever got paid. Has anyone else started asking for a kill fee before saying yes to flat rate stuff?
Seems like a lot of fuss over a pretty normal situation. Random gmail address offering almost a grand with no contract is an obvious red flag, and you already said the other two people never got paid, so that part pretty much answers itself. Asking for a kill fee is fine but it's not some big secret weapon, most brands will just say no and move on to the next person if they don't like it. Small brands with actual contracts and half upfront are just doing basic business, that's not a hot take, that's how it's supposed to work. Feels less like you cracked a code and more like you just dodged a scam.
