Rant: My friend in Phoenix swore by canned mackerel for cheap protein and I thought it was gross

She made me try a recipe where you mash it with mayo, mustard, and pickles on toast... and it was actually really good. I got a can for under $2 at Aldi and it made two big meals. Has anyone else found a cheap food they were totally wrong about?

Honestly canned fish always seemed like a last resort food to me. My grandpa ate sardines straight from the can and the smell put me off for years. Tried mackerel on crackers with some hot sauce recently and it completely changed my mind. What other cheap foods have people given a second chance?

What kind of hot sauce did you use?

My uncle ate that stuff for years and I still don't get the hype. It's just fish in a can.
