Just realized the worst part of that attic crawl in a 1990s split-level last Tuesday wasn't the heat, it was the homeowner yelling 'just run it under the carpet' when I explained the code violation.
He stood at the bottom of the ladder and argued with me for 15 minutes about his 'right' to have a tripping hazard in his own hallway, and I had to call my supervisor to get the install approved without doing it his way.

My last client in Oak Park tried that carpet trick. I just took a photo of the code book page on my phone and showed it to him. He grumbled but signed off once he saw it in black and white. Sometimes they just need to see it's not your personal rule.
