That networking event in Austin made me rethink my whole resume strategy

I went to a hiring mixer at a trade school last Tuesday and watched three recruiters toss resumes into a 'no' pile just because of format issues, not experience. One of them told me directly, plain text with no columns scans way faster for their software, and that's before a human even looks at it. I spent all weekend redoing my resume from a two-column design to a single simple layout and my callback rate went up noticeably. Has anyone else had luck ditching fancy templates for the most boring format possible?
