Tried a 4 in 1 rasp on end grain in my garage shop and the splinters stopped, but not for the reason I thought
Got tired of end grain tearing out on some white oak stool legs last month, so I swapped my block plane for a 4 in 1 rasp and worked the ends at a 15 degree angle instead of straight across. After about 20 minutes the tearout mostly went away, but the real fix was that the rasp was pushing the fibers down instead of slicing them clean, so I started finishing with 120 grit and the edges came out way smoother than anything I got off the plane. Cost me $18 at the hardware store in Akron and I've been using it on every leg since. Anyone else lean on a rasp over a plane for curved end grain, or am I just working too hard here?
