Hot take: The first apartment I toured in Logan Square was a total setup

I spent two weeks stressing about how small the unit was until a local told me the landlord staged it with a tiny bed and undersized furniture to make the rooms look bigger. Now I always bring a tape measure and ask for the actual square footage - has anyone else fallen for this trick?

Actually the furniture trick is illegal in Chicago now, landlords have to list real room sizes.

Just measure the room yourself with a tape measure before you sign anything. I've been burned by that furniture trick before, walked into a place that looked huge in photos and could barely fit a twin bed in the actual bedroom. Take pics of the measurements too so you have proof if they try to argue later. And honestly even if it's illegal in Chicago, landlords still try to pull stuff like this all the time so don't trust what they write down either.

Right that happened to me too. Felt like a clown.
