My 15 year old nephew asked why old YouTubers never got cancelled, and I didn't have a good answer
He was scrolling through some old gaming channels at my mom's house in Boise over the weekend and asked why those guys survived the stuff they did back in 2012. I tried explaining that the whole cancel machine barely existed yet, and most of us just moved on after a week because there was no clip going viral every three seconds. He looked at me like I was describing the Stone Age and said "so nobody was keeping receipts?" I've been thinking about that all week, because now a bad 20 second clip from a livestream can end someone's whole career before lunch. Were the old creators actually smarter about what they posted, or did we just have shorter memories back then?
