Best and worst weeks in this trade - my lucky break and crash out

Last Tuesday I had the perfect week going. Five parts in a row came out within 0.001 of spec on a Haas VF-2, no tweaks needed. But then Friday hit and I crashed a $400 carbide endmill into a vise jaw because I forgot to zero Z after a tool change. 30 seconds of distraction cost me a whole shift redoing setups. Has anyone else had a week where luck and disaster just trade places like that?

That perfect week going" is the part that gets me. I think people forget how fast your brain gets used to things going right, and that's exactly when you let your guard down. What nobody talks about is how the crash changes how you work for the next week too. You start double checking everything, second guessing every move, and it slows you way down. It took me three days after a crash like that to get back to my normal speed and trust myself again. The real cost isn't just the tool, it's the time you lose getting your confidence back.

The "double checking everything" part is way too real. I've been there where you stare at a simple cut list for ten minutes just because your brain is convinced you missed something. What helped me was making a checklist on my phone for the basic stuff I usually do without thinking, like checking the blade height or making sure the fence is locked. It sounds dumb but it keeps the second guessing from taking over your whole workflow. I also started taking a picture of my setup before I make a cut so if something goes wrong I can see what I actually did instead of guessing. You're right that the real cost is time and confidence. The tool is just stuff, but that mental reset is what really drains you.
