Old timer told me to switch to a 0.005 finish pass on my lathe and it saved me 30 minutes per part

I was doing 0.010 passes like always until a retired machinist at my supplier said to try half that and now my surface finish is way better on these stainless bushings, has anyone else gotten a tip that sounded wrong but worked perfectly?

Everyone loves a good story about the old timer with the magic fix, but I have to push back on this whole idea. You mentioned "our egos blind us," and I think it goes the other way just as often. Plenty of guys get talked into some trick that sounds clever and then they chase their tail for hours when the real issue is a dull insert or a worn bearing. The spindle backwards thing with the left hand tool sounds like a recipe for a crash, not a finish pass. I've seen guys try stuff like that, ruin a part, and then have to explain to the boss why they did something that goes against every manual they ever read. There is a reason the standard way is the standard way, most of the time it's been proven over decades. If a lighter cut works for that guy's bushings, fine, but that doesn't mean we should all start questioning every basic setup because one retired fella said so. Sometimes the right answer is just to check your tool geometry or your work holding before you reinvent the wheel.

Just about fell off my stool when an old timer told me to try a negative rake insert on aluminum - thought he was pranking me but darn if it didnt cut like butter and left a mirror finish. I've learned the hard way that my ego gets in the way of good advice more often than not. Still remember the day I spent THREE HOURS fighting a chatter issue on a brass part until a grumpy old guy walked by and said "slow down and take lighter cuts dummy." Took me 20 minutes after that. Point is, sometimes the best tips sound completely backwards because we're so used to doing things the "standard" way.

...and honestly that reminds me of exactly what happened to my buddy Dave over at the fab shop. He was fighting these thin walled aluminum tubes for like two days, chattering like crazy, trying every speed and feed combo he knew. Then one of the old guys from the tool sharpening place told him to try running the spindle BACKWARDS with a left hand tool. Sound absolutely insane right? Well he tried it just to shut the guy up and it worked flawless, zero chatter, beautiful finish every time. @henderson.vera hit the nail on the head, sometimes our egos and the "standard" way blind us to the simple stuff that just works. I swear these old timers have some kind of secret knowledge they only pass down when they see you suffering enough.
