The old timer in cell 3 said to never trust the tool offset screen, and he was right
I was running a batch of 4140 parts in cell 3 and the screen showed all zeros, so I figured I was good to go. Then Dave, who's been at this shop in Rockford for 22 years, told me to always double check the offset with a test cut because the display lies. Sure enough, the tool was off by .012 and I would have scrapped 8 parts before catching it. Anyone else run into screens that don't match what's actually happening?
Dave knows his stuff. Had the same thing happen on a Haas where the wear offset wasn't showing right after a tool change, screen said we were dead on but the first part came out .008 small on the bore. Started doing a test cut on a scrap slug every shift after that, takes 30 seconds and saves me from scrapping a whole run. Old timers earned those habits the hard way and we get them for free if we just listen.
