The older guys at my shop swear by chip thinning but I think they're overcomplicating things
I heard Bob from the morning crew telling a new guy that you need to adjust chip thinning on every toolpath or you're wasting time. I've been running a Haas VF-2 for about 4 years now and I just bump up feeds and speeds by feel when I see the chips changing color. Does anyone else just run it based on how the machine sounds instead of doing all those math formulas?

Man I read an article last week in Modern Machine Shop about this exact thing and it basically said chip thinning is real but most guys way overthink it. The engineer they interviewed said you can get 90% of the benefit just by bumping up your feed per tooth when your radial engagement drops below half the tool diameter. Like you don't need to bust out a calculator for every single pass just keep an eye on your stepover and adjust accordingly. I go by sound and chip color too that's how I learned from an old timer who ran Bridgeports back in the day.
