DAE argue about wet vs dry welding for shallow repairs, or did a 22 year guy in Galveston change my mind?
Last month we had a piling job near Galveston in 6 feet of water and I was all set to do it dry in a caisson like always. A 22 year old diver on my crew said just burn it wet with a 3/16 rod and save the setup time, and I told him he was nuts. We tried it his way on two test welds, cut them apart at the shop, and the wet ones held up fine on the bend test. Now I am wondering if I have been wasting time and money on habitat setups for shallow stuff all along. Any old hands out there still swear wet is junk, or have you switched over too?
