A retired tech at a garage sale told me to stop using thermal paste remover and just use coffee filters, he was right
So about a year ago I'm at this garage sale in Tucson and this older guy sees me looking at a box of old pentium chips and we start talking shop. He tells me he did bench work for 30 years and says the one thing that saved him the most time was ditching the fancy thermal pad wipes and just using plain coffee filters with a little 91 percent isopropyl. I honestly brushed it off at first because I had been using those pre moistened pads for years and figured he was just old school. Fast forward to a Dell laptop rebuild two weeks ago where the pads kept leaving this weird lint residue on the die and I could not get a clean seat. I grabbed a coffee filter from the break room, put a few drops of iso on it, and the old paste came off in one wipe with zero lint. I have done maybe 40 repastes since then with filters and I have not had a single comeback for high temps. The part that kills me is how much I was paying for those little packets, like 8 bucks for 25. Has anyone else switched to filters or is there something even better I am missing?
