Tried wet curing a slab with burlap for 10 days in Phoenix and got a weird map of stains
Poured a 14x20 patio slab for a customer in Chandler two weeks back and decided to try the old burlap and soaker hose trick instead of my usual cure and seal. Kept it wet for 10 days straight and when I pulled the burlap off, the surface had these dark blotches in a grid pattern right where the burlap folds sat. The customer actually liked it, said it looked like stone, but I can't figure out if I did something wrong or if that's just how burlap lays down. Has anyone else gotten uneven color from wet curing, or do I need to switch to a different cover?
So you basically invented accidental stone stamping with a side of burlap, congrats on the free upgrade. But yeah, that blotching is the burlap's fault, not yours. Where the folds sat, the fabric stayed wetter and pressed tighter against the cream, so those spots cured slower and darker than the flat areas. Phoenix heat makes it worse because the exposed high spots dry out fast while the fold lines keep sweating. If you want even color next time, ditch the burlap and go with a single layer of wet blankets or plastic sheeting pulled tight so there are no overlap lines. Or just tell every customer it's a custom finish and charge extra, since yours already thought it was stone.
