Neighbor told me my deck stain was blotchy, turns out I skipped the wood conditioner step

I stained my pressure treated deck last spring and thought it looked fine until my neighbor pointed out all the dark spots. He said you have to use a wood conditioner first on new pine to get even absorption. I redid a section of it with conditioner and the color came out way more consistent. Has anyone else had luck fixing a blotchy stain job without starting over?

Wait, you're saying the stains are actually PET stains and you peeled them off like that's a normal thing?

Didn't I read somewhere that those dark spots could be mold growing under the surface from too much moisture? That doesn't sound like something you'd want to peel off like it's nothing.
