Noticed a pattern on a hospital job in Ohio that changed how I hang ceilings
Was on a 3 week job at a county hospital near Dayton, putting up drywall in the new ER wing. We were doing the ceiling grid and hanging 5/8 fire rated board above the corridors. One of the older guys, Mike, kept marking the studs with a red crayon before we even started. Turns out he was marking where the fire stops were behind the wall, so when we screwed off the ceiling we wouldn't hit them and crack the mud joint later. Simple thing, but I've never seen anyone do that on a commercial job before. I always just ran the screws wherever the grid landed. Now I'm looking at every ceiling I hang differently. Has anyone else run into a marking system like that, or do you have your own way of avoiding fire stop locations?
