Camping in the woods taught me to bring a soldering iron along.
A dead radio in the wild taught me portable tools are crucial.

Doubt it needs to be that extreme. A multi-tool and some duct tape fixes 90% of things. How often are you really fixing circuit boards by the campfire? Just seems like extra weight for a "maybe" problem.

Seriously, a small soldering iron and some wire weighs nothing. I fixed my headlamp's loose connection last fall when it got dark early, and that alone made it worth carrying. If you're out for more than a weekend, that "maybe" problem becomes a "probably" problem with any electronic gear. The weight penalty is so small compared to the total pain of having a critical piece of gear die. I'd rather have it and not need it than be stuck trying to rig something with tape.
