That weird smell in the basement turned out to be a major red flag
I was so excited about this ranch style house (it had a big yard for my dog). During the final walk through, I caught a musty odor in the basement corner. My home inspector said it was probably old carpet, but I got a gut feeling. I paid for a mold test (best two hundred bucks I ever spent) and it came back positive for toxic black mold. The sellers had to replace all the drywall and fix a leaky pipe before I would sign. Now I tell everyone to trust their nose and never skip a detailed check for moisture. It's not just about looks, hidden issues can cost a fortune. Always get a second opinion if something feels off, even if it delays the process.

Trusting your nose sounds good, but how often is musty mold actually toxic? Most basements have some moisture, and it doesn't always mean a major health risk.

Honestly, not all mold is toxic, so your point makes sense. Basements do get damp, and lots of folks deal with minor mold without big problems. Still, if someone's already sick or allergic, it's better to play it safe and get a test.

Can you really tell if mold is toxic just by smelling it? I once ignored a funky smell in my old apartment and ended up with a sinus infection that lasted weeks, so maybe my nose isn't the best judge. But from what I've learned, any mold can be a problem for people with allergies or weak immune systems. The cost to fix it later is way higher than testing early. Even if it's not black mold, moisture leads to rot and structural issues over time. So yeah, I'd say always get it checked to be safe.
