I finally finished that classic cyberpunk trilogy, but the inconsistent depiction of neural interfaces left me confused.
Can anyone recommend sci-fi works that establish clear, logical rules for how brain-computer interfaces function within their universe? I prefer stories where the technology feels integral to the world-building.

Totally get where you're coming from. Used to think neural interfaces were just cool gadgets for plot convenience, but then I read 'Altered Carbon'. The way it lays out cortical stack tech with hard limits on resleeving and remote storage completely changed my perspective. For clear rules, check out Richard K. Morgan's Takeshi Kovacs series. The interface isn't just tacked on, it drives the entire society and crime system. Another solid pick is 'Snow Crash' for its linguistic hacking framework that feels surprisingly plausible.

@juliarobinson, how do hard limits in 'Altered Carbon' shape personal identity?

But what happens when those hard limits make death optional but identity fragile? It's not just about crime, it forces a brutal reevaluation of self when you can be copied or erased.
