Rewatched a 1998 ad for a local furniture store and counted 3 typos in 30 seconds
Back when I was a kid in Ohio, my dad would yell at the TV every time this Bob's Furniture knockoff ran their commercial with 'Sofer' spelled wrong on the price tag. I pulled it up on YouTube last week after hitting my 200th saved blooper clip in a folder on my desktop, and the typos were somehow worse than I remembered. Does anyone else keep a running count of how many local ads they catch screwing up the same word twice in one spot?
The thing nobody talks about is that those typos were probably left in on purpose. Local businesses figured out years ago that a misspelled word makes people look twice, and looking twice means the name of the store sticks in your head longer than a clean ad ever would. My uncle ran a tire shop in Toledo and he swore his "Break Fast Special" sign got more walk-ins than any normal promo he ever ran. So yeah, I count them too, but half the time I'm sitting there wondering if I'm the one getting played. Bob's knew exactly what they were doing with "Sofer" and your dad yelling at the TV was free ad space in your living room. The real bloopers are the ones where the business clearly had no clue, like a phone number with one digit missing. Those are the ones worth saving in the folder.
