A guy in a 2019 Reddit thread said my banned ad breakdowns missed the point, so I changed how I rate them
Back in 2019 I used to just post banned ads with a score out of 10 and call it a day. Then a user named chrome_ghost_77 replied to my post about that old K-Mart back to school spot and said "you rate the shock, not the reason it got pulled." That hit hard because he was right, I was giving 9s to stuff that just had loud noises. So now every post I make lists the actual complaint, the year it aired, and the network that killed it, usually 3 to 4 lines of context. My scores go up when there's a real paper trail, like that 1997 Taco Bell chihuahua thing that got 47 complaints filed with the FCC. Anyone else here changed how they score these after someone called out their ratings?
The 47 FCC complaints for the Taco Bell chihuahua is a solid detail, but nobody ever checks the FTC side for ads that got pulled over kid marketing, and that paperwork is way juicier. Mikey from the Life cereal spots alone would probably beat half the scores on your list.
