Paid $40 for a VHS of 1987 local car dealer ads at an estate sale and it paid off
I grabbed a dusty tape at an estate sale in Ohio for $40 because the label said "Channel 8 breaks, 1987 to 1989" and I wanted the jingles. Turns out it had a full 30 minute block of a Cleveland dealer named Big Lou yelling about his lot, plus a jingle for a carpet place that I have not been able to get out of my head since. Does anyone know if there is a way to find more of these local market tapes, or am I stuck hunting estate sales forever?
A buddy of mine ran into the same wall and found that a lot of these got saved by local TV history groups. He joined a Facebook page for old Cleveland broadcasting and people there trade dubs all the time. The trick is to search the station call letters and the city, not the dealer name, because collectors file them by market. Also check the Internet Archive for uploads of "airchecks," since folks digitize these blocks and post them for free. Sometimes the estate sale sellers list a whole lot of tapes on eBay if you set a saved search for your city and year. That carpet jingle will live in your head forever now, sorry to say.
