Sat through Up with my niece and finally got why my dad used to leave the room during sad commercials
My dad walked out of the living room during every ASPCA ad when I was a kid, and I always thought he was just being dramatic. Last Saturday I watched Up with my 6 year old niece, and when the wife gets sick and he's sitting alone with that photo album, I had to go "check on the laundry" in the other room. I came back and my niece is fine, just eating goldfish crackers and asking why the old man is sad. I realized my dad wasn't being tough or weird back in the 90s, he was just a guy who couldn't handle sad stuff in front of his kids. I still don't know if my niece got what was happening in that opening or if she was just vibing on the balloons. Does anyone know the right age where kids start actually crying at movies, or do they just skip right to laughing at the dog?
