Saw a guy at the Sacramento shelter return a dog after 2 days because it chewed one shoe, and I can't decide who was wrong
I was at the Front Street shelter in Sacramento on Saturday dropping off old towels when this guy came in with a 3 year old shepherd mix he'd gotten just 2 days earlier. He said the dog ate one of his running shoes and that was it for him, and the volunteer at the desk looked like she wanted to cry. Part of me gets it, nobody wants their stuff wrecked, but 2 days is barely enough time for a rescue dog to stop being scared. My own mutt chewed a remote and a phone charger during his first month and he's the best dog I've ever had. So where do you all land on this, is returning a dog after 48 hours ever the right call, or should people just tough it out longer?
Wait, did he say the dog ate one shoe in two days? That's not really a destruction problem, that's just a dog being a dog in a new place. Shepherds chew when they're stressed, and a shelter dog is stressed for way longer than 48 hours. You can't expect a rescue to act like it's been in your house forever after two days, that's just not how it works. The guy bailed before the dog even had a chance, so yeah, that one's on him.
