I was still using the old school steam towels until a class in Scottsdale

For years I thought a hot towel was just a hot towel, you know? Then at a workshop in Scottsdale last fall, the instructor pointed out how much product it was wiping away before the mask could even work. I switched to using a warm mist steamer for 90 seconds instead, and my extractions got way easier. Anyone else make that switch and notice a difference in hydration levels after the facial?

My uncle warned me about a specific 9/11 theory back in 2005, and he was right

He told me to look into the official reports on the building collapses, not just the popular videos online. I spent about two weeks reading the NIST findings from 2005. The details about the fireproofing being knocked off the steel beams changed my whole view. It showed me how a complex event gets simplified into a wrong idea. Has anyone else had a family member point them toward the actual documents on a big conspiracy?

That $30 'skip the line' pass in Rome was the worst travel spend ever

Bought it for the Colosseum thinking it would save a full afternoon. The 'express' line was just as packed as the regular one, maybe even slower because they kept checking everyone's fancy tickets. We waited over an hour anyway and I felt like a total sucker. Anyone have a real trick for avoiding those insane queues without getting scammed?

Tried to air fry a whole apple and it turned into a sweet, soft surprise

I had a couple of apples getting soft on the counter and figured I'd try something different. I cored one, left the skin on, and put it in the air fryer at 375 for about 15 minutes. It came out all puffed up and tender, like a baked apple but faster. The inside was warm and almost like applesauce. Has anyone else tried cooking whole fruit like this?

Got schooled on salt at a food festival in Portland

I was doing a demo at Feast Portland last fall, just finishing a pan sauce. A guy in the front row, who turned out to be a retired chef from a famous spot in New Orleans, leaned over and said, 'You're adding it all at the end, that's why it tastes sharp.' He explained how he salts in layers, a little at each step, starting with sweating the onions. I tried it right there with my next batch, and the difference was huge. So, do you all salt in stages or mostly at the finish?

For years, I rolled my eyes whenever a celebrity would 'accidentally' go live on Instagram and show something weird. It felt like a cheap way to get headlines. Then last month, I saw a clip of a famous singer who clearly thought she'd ended a video call with her manager. The panic on her face was so real, and the video was gone in under a minute, but of course someone screen-recorded it. That sheer, genuine 'oh no' moment changed my mind. Update: I finally got crispy tofu right after a year of soggy messes

For the longest time, my air fryer tofu came out either too dry or weirdly soft. I used to just toss cubes in a bit of oil and soy sauce for 15 minutes at 375. Last week, I saw a tip online to coat the tofu in a tablespoon of cornstarch first. I tried it at 400 degrees for 12 minutes, shaking halfway. The difference is HUGE, it's actually crunchy now. Has anyone else found a better coating, or is cornstarch the best way to go?

Question about the right way to cut around a floor register

I was doing a job in a 1950s house last month, and the homeowner asked me to replace the register cover after I was done. When I pulled up the old one, I saw the previous installer had cut the carpet in a perfect square, about an inch bigger than the hole. My whole career, maybe 12 years, I'd been cutting a tight, exact fit right to the metal edge of the register frame. Seeing that extra inch of carpet tucked under the new cover made me stop and think. It seems like it would prevent fraying and make future replacements way easier. But is that extra material a potential lump or a tripping hazard over time? What's the standard method you all use?

My game group's campaign ended early because one guy kept arguing about the rules.

Yeah, I get where blakem37 is coming from. I used to be the guy who'd argue a rule for ten minutes if I thought I was right. Then I saw a game of Catan completely die because two people spent half an hour fighting over whether a road placement was legal. The host just quietly put the lid on the box and we all went home. That was it. Now I just let the game owner's call stand in the moment. You can look it up later, but in the middle of the game, keeping things moving is what actually matters.

Switched from a free brush pack to a paid one for character art, and the difference is wild

Yeah that's so true. I had the same thing happen last year, my watercolor brushes just made everything look muddy. Got a cheap set from an artist @the_sandra actually mentioned once, and the difference was crazy. The wet edges actually bled like real paint. It wasn't about the tablet at all, just bad brush files.

My $200 orbital sander is the best money I ever spent, hands down.

That's a solid tool for sure, but it's total overkill for most weekend projects. A decent random orbit sander gets the job done without the weight or price tag. Sometimes the fancy gear just isn't worth the hassle.

Checked out a new surplus electronics warehouse in Tacoma last weekend

What do you even say to a seller like that? I had the same thing happen at a flea market last year. I just put the unit back and walked out. @the_sandra is totally right about it being a scam. A real refurb means they actually opened it up and fixed the known weak points. That voltage check is just lazy and tells you nothing about how long it will last. I only buy old power supplies now if I can see clear photos of the inside board first, or if I'm planning to recap it myself the second I get home.
