Appreciation post: the guy at the flea market in Reno who sang the jingle at me while I was sorting through VHS tapes
So there I was at a flea market in Reno two Saturdays back, digging through a box of dusty VHS tapes, mostly old movies, when I pulled out a tape labelled just 'commercials 1991-92.' I asked the seller how much. He squinted at the tape, looked up, and in a perfect singalong voice started doing the whole jingle for a local carpet store chain from back in the day. Word for word, right there over his folding table. He told me his dad ran a TV repair shop and they taped everything off the air, so now he sells those tapes for $10 a pop. Here is my debate: did old local ads stick with us because the jingles were actually catchy, or because we had no choice but to watch them? Some folks say it was pure repetition, three channels and no remote means anything gets burned in. Others say those local spots had real craft because they were made by small shops that cared. I keep flip flopping on it. Anyway, the tape was $10 and I bought it, and the JCPenney commercial on it has been in my head all week. If a local ad from your town is still stuck in your brain, drop the jingle, I want to see how far this goes.
