Tried to fix my old Lite-Brite last weekend in Dayton and made the whole thing worse
So I dug my Lite-Brite out of my parents' attic in Dayton about two weeks ago and the bulb was dead, no surprise after sitting in a box since roughly 1994. I figured it would be easy, just match the old bulb at a hardware store, so I took it to a Ace on Wilmington Pike and the guy told me they stopped carrying that size sometime around 2008. I got stubborn and ordered a pack of 10 off eBay for $7, waited 5 days, popped one in, and the whole board lit up for about 2 minutes before the thing started smelling like hot plastic. Turns out the old wiring had dried out and I basically cooked the contact strip. Now I've got a Lite-Brite that won't turn on at all and 9 spare bulbs sitting in a drawer. I know some folks gut these and drop in LED strips but that feels like cheating to me. Has any of you actually rewired one of these things, or did I just turn a working toy into a paperweight for good?
