Update: My brother swore neural nets were a fad in 2015, now he runs a vision team in Austin
He told me at a BBQ in 2016 that I was wasting my time learning about backprop, and he said it would blow over like 3D TV. Now he manages 12 people doing exactly that, so I ask him about my old take every Thanksgiving.
The "blow over like 3D TV" line got me because my old roommate said almost the same thing about deep learning back in 2014. He told me I was chasing a trend and that real AI people worked on expert systems and good old fashioned rules. Fast forward and he is now a staff engineer at a company doing model training at scale, and he acts like he was on board the whole time. The funny part is he was the one who got me into CS in the first place, so I trusted him and almost dropped my machine learning class because of it. Now every time he brings up some new paper I remind him that he once called the whole field a hype bubble. Family and friends who doubted us never bring it up on their own, you have to do the reminding.
