Hot take: my brother in law's "preheat for 5 minutes no matter what" rule fixed my frozen fries
I always figured preheating an air fryer was a waste of time since the thing heats up so fast anyway. My brother in law Rob, who cooks pretty much everything in his, kept on me about giving it a full 5 minutes at 400 before anything goes in. I brushed him off for months until one night I was doing frozen fries and they came out pale and limp in the middle, so I gave his way a shot the next time. Same bag of fries, same temp, but with the 5 minute preheat they came out actually crispy and the middles were done. Turns out cold fries going into a cold basket just steam each other for the first few minutes. Now I do the preheat for anything frozen or breaded, maybe 3 or 4 minutes if I'm in a hurry, and it's a real difference. Rob gets to say I owe him one, which he brings up every holiday. Does anybody skip it for certain foods and get away with it?
