A dead 12v battery on a Tuesday install taught me to test sirens before mounting them
Had a rough one last Tuesday on a residential panel swap in Mesa. I got everything wired up, keypad powered on fine, all zones showing ready, so I climbed down and went to test the exterior siren. Nothing. Dead silence. I pulled the siren back off the wall and tested it on the bench and it read 0 volts on my meter. The siren had been sitting on my van shelf for probably 8 months, and the little 12v backup battery inside it had drained down and never recovered. Cost me about 45 minutes of rework and a second trip up the ladder. Now I bench test every siren and strobe before it goes on the wall, even brand new ones out of the box. Anyone else have gear rot on the van shelf without you noticing?
