Got called out on my diagnostic process by a client in Tempe

I was working on a Bosch dishwasher that kept tripping the GFCI, and I went straight for the heating element like I always do. The homeowner, an electrical engineer, watched me for a minute and said, 'You're skipping the basics. Did you even check the door switch wiring for a pinch?' I hadn't. Sure enough, a wire in the door hinge was nicked and grounding out. Now I start every wet location appliance with a visual on the door and drain lines before I touch a meter. Anyone else had a simple check they added after getting schooled?

Ugh, that's a solid wake-up call. I got burned on a washing machine leak because I didn't look at the simple stuff first. Now I always check the drain hose for a kink and the inlet valve screens for gunk before I even open my tool bag. It's embarrassing how often the fix is right in front of your face.

Yeah, that "right in front of your face" thing is so true...

But is it really that big of a deal if you miss the obvious thing sometimes?
