My old shop lead in Gary swore WD-40 would save a waterlogged washer pump, and I lost a $180 call to find out he was dead wrong
Six years back I was doing a same day call on a Kenmore washer in Gary, Indiana, water sitting in the drum after every spin cycle. I pulled the pump and it was shot, real obvious. My shop lead, Dan, told me to just hose it with WD-40, let it dry an hour, and send the lady on her way. Said he learned it off a guy in the 80s. I tried it. Pump seized two days later mid wash and dumped water all over her basement floor.
She called back mad, and I ate the second visit plus a $180 cleanup bill out of my own pocket because Dan waved it off as my fault for not letting it dry long enough. The only good part is I got a free lesson out of it. Water and electric pump guts don't mix, and no spray can fixes a worn shaft seal.
So what dumb shortcut did a mentor hand you that cost you money? I got at least two more if this one gets any replies.
