Took a $40 gamble on a used control board from a parts guy in Tulsa instead of the $210 new one, and I'm still not sure I won
Customer's Whirlpool dryer stopped heating and I had to pick between a new board at $210 or a pulled one off a guy on Marketplace for $40 who swore it tested good. I rolled the dice on the cheap one, it worked for about 3 loads, then the same no-heat came back and I had to eat the $40 plus a second trip to the house. Now I'm stuck wondering if I should've just ate the $210 up front, so do you guys gamble on used boards or is that a hard no for you?
That "swore it tested good" line is the part that always gets you, because testing on a bench is not the same as running under a real load. A buddy of mine did the same thing with a used board for his fridge, it ran a week then died, and he ended up buying new anyway plus losing a Saturday. For me it depends on how hard the board is to get to, because if I have to pull the dryer apart twice, saving $170 stops feeling like saving.
