Went from a thermal camera to guessing, huge mistake on a fridge line
Last month I was doing a walk in cooler repair and left my FLIR in the truck. Thought I could just feel for the frost line on the evaporator coil. Spent 45 minutes chasing my tail on a unit that had a bad TXV. Found it by finally walking out to get the camera. 10 minutes later I had the whole thing diagnosed. Anyone else notice these cheap IR temp guns are useless for coil problems or is it just me?
Good temp guns have their place but they only show surface heat, not what's happening inside the coil. I ran into the same thing on a reach in freezer and wasted a whole afternoon because the frost line looked fine from the outside. What finally worked for me was checking the suction line temperature right at the compressor and comparing it to the evaporator outlet with a clamp probe. That difference told me more than any visual scan. Still, nothing beats having the thermal camera when you're dealing with a tricky TXV or a plugged distributor.
